the founding chancellor,sir john Winthrop hackeet,, died in 1916, and bequeathed property which, after being carefully managed for ten years, yielded 425,000 to the university, a far larger sum than expected. this allowed the construction of the main buildings. many buildings and landmarks within the university bear his name, including Winthrop hall hackeet hall. in addition, his bequest funded many scholarship, because he did not wish eager students to be deterred from studying because they could not afford o do so.

the university degree structure has changed recently to further separate the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees available. justification for this new system is due to its simplicity and effectiveness in outsiders understanding the system. it is the first university in western Australia to have bachelors degree. the university offers a bachelor of science bachelor of commerce (BCom), bachelor of Arts (BA) and bachelor of  design  (BDes).

the university has further facilities across Stirling highway in Nedlands, linked by pedestrian underpasses beneath the highway, and paths in front of the residential colleges. although not directly contiguous with the main crawely sire, the university does own almost every parcel of land between them and has long term plans to expand the two sites towards each other. the university also has facilities in Clarendon, purchased in 205 from Edith cowan university. the university prefers to refer to these facilities asa UWA cleramont and as a campus. the university remains a single campus institution. UWA claremont is approximately 5 km west of the main crawely campus. further west still, the university also has staff in central claremont.

the university established a UWA Albany Centre in 1999  to meet rural education needs. in 2005, curtain university of technology joined UWA in Albany to provide additional course offerings to the local rural community. UWA Albany offers postgraduate coursework and research programmers through the institute for regional development and the centre of excellence in natural resource management. the UWA rural clinical school provides year-long rural placements for fifth-year medical  students in Albany, derby, broome, port headland karratha, geraldton,bunbury, narrogin, esperance, and kalgoorlie, western Australia, additionally, the university is involved in the combined universities centre for rural health in geraldton.

high school graduate with high academic achievement are also able to apply for "assured pathways". this means they are assured a place in the postgraduate degree for their chosen discipline while they complete their undergraduate degree. assured pathways are offered for studies in fields such as medicine, law, dentistry and engineering. prospective students may apply for an assured pathway  through the bachelor of philosophy. the assured pathways to dentistry via the bachelor of philosophy is the most difficult undergraduate and postgraduate pathway to obtain from the university. only one place is offered each year.

Macquarie University

Macqarie University

macquarie university was formally established in 1964 with the passage of the macquarie university act 1964 by the new south wales parliament. the university was designed in the brutalist style and developed by the renowned town planner Walter Abraham who also oversaw the next 20 years of planning and development for the university. A committee appointed to advise the state government on the establishment of the new university at North Ryde nominated Abraham as the architect-planner.the fledgling macquarie university council decided that planing for the campus would be done within the university,rather than by consultants, and this led to the establishment of the architect-planners office.

the idea of founding a third university in Sydney was flagged in the early 1960s when the new south wales government formed a committee of enquiry into higher education to deal with a perceived emergency in university enrollments in new south wales. during this enquiry the senate of the university of Sydney put in a submission which highlighted  the immediate need to establish a third university in the metropolitan area. after much debate a future campus location was selected in what was then a semi-rural part of north Ryde, and it was decided that the future university be named after Lachlan Macquarie, an important early governor of the colony of new south wales.

During 2007,Macquarie university restructured its student organisation after an audit raised questions about management of hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds by student organisations. at the  center of the investigation was victor Ma.president of the Macquarie university students council, who was previously involved in a high-profile case of student election fixing at the university of Sydney. the university council resolved to immediately remove ma from his position.vice-chancellor schwarlz cited an urgent need to reform macquaries main student bodies.however,ma strongly denied any wrong doing and labelled the controversy  a case of character  assassination .the federal court ordered on 23 may 2007 that macquqrie university union ltd be wound up.

the university has a long history of championing the rights of women in higher education. it was the second university in the English-speaking world (after the university of London, 1878) to admit women on equal terms with men (1881), through women studied alongside men from the commencement of classes in 1876, and were equally eligible for all academic prizes and honors its first female graduate was Edith Emily dornwell, who was also the first person in Australia to receive the degree of bachelor of science . the university also graduated Australia first female surgeon Laura flower (MB)Ruby Davy(B.Mus, 1907; D.Mus ,1918) was the first Australia woman to receive a doctorate in music. the university was also the first to elect a woman to a university council in Australia, Helen Mayo.

the thebarton campus, which is also known as Adelaide university Research park is the base of the university office of industry liaison. the campus works in conjunction with the university commercial partners. commercial enterprises at thebarton campus include businesses involved in materials engineering, biotechnology, environmental services, information technology , industrial design laser/optics technology, health products, engineering services, radar systems, telecommunications and petroleum services. the campus also provides much of the infrastructure for the graduate entrepreneurial program which allows recent graduates to starte businesses with support from the university.the flames for the recent Sydney and Athens Olympic games were developed at the Thebarton campus by the TEC group.

the university of Adelaide, unlike most universities,did not set any land aside on its North terrace campus for student accommodation, due mainly to an ideological opposition to the culture of live-in students, but also influenced by the small size of the original campus. however, demand for residential college accommodation led to the establishment of private colleges affiliated to the university.st.marks college was founded by the Anglican church in 1925, Aquinas college in 1950 by the catholic church,Lincoln college in 1952 by the Methodist church, and later st anns college , Kathleen lumley college and Australian Lutheran college. all are  located within close walking distance of the university , across the river Torrens in north Adelaide. in addition to providing accommodation and meals for local, interstate and international students, each college arganises academic support, social activities and opportunities for its members.

the university of south Australia is a public research university in the Australia state south Australia. it was formed in 1991 with the merger of the south Australian institute of technology(1889)and colleges of advanced education (1856). the legislation to establish and name the new university of south Australian was introduced in 1990 by the hon mike Rann mp minister of employment and further education. with more than 32,000 students, the university is south Australia"s largest more than 6,000 students international ,with almost half studying in Adelaide and the remainder offshore.

the campus also houses many internationally and nationally-recognised research institutes and centres, the newest of which is the new multi-million future industries institute which focuses on buildings knowledge and capacity in core future industries. through national and global research partnership in new technologies,such as our academic partnership with university college London , the institute undertakes global research inspired by real world issues. it combines and builds from the established research capability and reputation of the former LAN Wark research institute, Mawson insitiue and Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation, and extends into other complementary research capabilities within the university Division of information technology ,engineering and the environment and across the university.

in 2014 the university opened an $85 million cutting-edge learning centere on the city west campus.Named for alumnus, artist Jeffrey smart, the building houses teaching and learning spaces, access to ibrary resources and an integrated range of student support services. also being built on the city west campus are the new great hall featuring a sports complex , swimming pool and facilities for graduations, exams, corporate and cultural events which opens in 2017 and a new health innovation building. part of the bio medical and health precinct being developed on north terrace. the health innovation building, due to open in 2018, is a $230m health and research facility to support a collaborative and holistic approach to health research. it will also house the university new science creativity education studio  which will bring science and technology out of the lab and into public realm , creating new opportunities for scientist , students and industrial innovate create and collaborate.

the campus has undergone several building upgrades and expansions in recent years. the basil HetZel building was opened in 2005 and includes 2,000 square meters of multipurpose biomechanical, pharmaceutical and microbiological laboratory space. there was a major reconstruction to the  historic brook man building in 2008-09 to include a new outdoor plaza, a new exercise physiology clinic  , outdoor walkways, student lounges and other upgrades.

the university of Queensland, commonly referred to as UQ is an Australian public research university primarily located inQueensland"s capital city, Brisbane . founded in 1909, UQ is one of Australia oldest, most selective and comprehensive universities. the main campus is located in the inner suburb of st Lucia, southwest of the  brilliance central business district, with other UQ in campuses in Gt ton, hers ton and the UQ Ochsner medical centers clinical school in new Orleans, united states. the university of Queensland is a member of the Australian research-intensive group of eight, the global network of research universities university 21, and a contributing charter member of EdX, an online higher education consortium led by Harvard andMIT.

recent research achievements at UQ including pioneering the cervical cancer vaccine invention, and development of high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for portable scanning of human limbs. UQ produced numerous  distinguished alumni across a wide range of professions.several notable examples include a noble laureate in physiology and medicine, a recipient of the "triple crown of acting" (having won primetime Emmy, tony and academy awards), a triple Grammy award winner, of two fortune global 500 company , the first female governor general of Australian two chief juices of Australia, a consecutive Olympic gold medal winner, the principal of kings college London, the president of Indiana universityand chancellor of the university of California, San Francisco.

from its inception in 1936,the UQMS has maintained a significant and respected voice in medicine at a university, state and national level. the society is led by an executive of 10 medical students and supported by a team of representatives and convenors in excess of 80 medical students. while many traditions such as the annual may ball, sports day and trephine magazine have continued to the present day, the activities of the UQMS have expanded in recently years in response to student interest and diversity.such additions include the establishment of an international subcommittee,research network subcommittee,the university of Qeensland surgical interest group and a satellite office at the Ipswich campus. the UQMS is also committed to developing world health and Australian indigenous health through the UQ united nations millennium development goals project, a joint initiative between the UQMS and school of medicine.

1893 the Queensland university Extension movement was begun by a group of private individuals who organised public lecture courses in adult education, hoping to excite wider community support for a university in Queensland. in 1894, 245 students were enrolled in the extension classes and the lectures were described as practical and useful. in 1906 the university extension movement staged the university congress, a forum for interested delegates to promote the  idea of a university. Opinion was mobilized, a fund was started and a draft bill for a Queensland university was prepared. stress was laid on the practical aspects of university education and its importance for the commence of Queensland. the proceedings of the congress were forwarded to Queensland premier William kiidston. in October 1906, sixty acres in Victoria park were gazetted for university purposes.
